The future of politics is a real laughing matter

by Dawn Leach

Cleveland-Just in time for elections, Dobama Theatre is presenting the world premiere of Soundbiting, a play about election campaign shenanigans.

According to openly gay director Roger Truesdell, the play

is about "how politicians are using technology and good old-fashioned dirty politics to get ahead."

Soundbiting is set somewhere in the near future in a highly technological America, where crime and pollution are rampant and few people dare to risk leaving their living rooms. Full of irony and humor, the story centers around a fictionalized senatorial race, run entirely in the media and on the "Net."

"There's the incumbent Democratic senator [Jack], who's a lifetime politician, and he's been in everybody's pocket forever," said Truesdell. "He starts the play by being forty points ahead in the polls, and the whole play is watching his lead eroded by the upand-coming evil Republican senator."

What the hell are we laughing at?"

In the Dobama production, Flynn is a lesbian, although her sexual orientation is not central to the plot.

"For those in the know, it's obvious, but it's not like hit you over the head with a brick."

Kate (Triste Crawford, standing) discusses her involuntary campaign with Flynn (Heather Anderson), a bill collector drafted as campaign manager.

Pat, the Republican senator, deliberately creates a third party in the race in order to split the liberal vote. He fraudulently enters his ex-wife, Kate, into the race against her will, and "wackiness ensues," said Truesdell.

Although Kate originally has no political ambitions, she eventually realizes that she may have an opportunity to have a positive impact on a corrupt system, and enlists a campaign manager, Flynn.

"The play gets actually kind of serious by the end of it," Truesdell said. "I'm hoping the audience will laugh for two hours and by the end of the evening go:

Truesdell said that part of the message of the play is that it is important to get involved in the political process, a message that he feels is particularly important to gays and lesbians.

"I think we as human beings need to realize that we can't just ignore the politi. cal system, because it is ever pervasive in our lives and if we just ignore it, it will go ahead without us," said Truesdell. "The people who are in charge will set their own agendas, and if we just choose to ignore what those things are, then we're the ones who are going to suffer."
